Call of Duty: Ghosts – Campaign Mode
What do Superman Returns and Call of Duty: Ghosts have in common? Brandon Routh and an apocalyptic storyline. Ghosts’ plot is almost as unbelievable as Lex Luthor using a one-foot crystal to create a new land mass. Nevertheless, the gameplay in Call of Duty: Ghosts is fun and manages to fill in the void where a tighter and more believable storyline should be.
Call of Duty: Ghosts takes place in what appears to be the “not-to-distant future.” The good guys are betrayed by the bad guys with the latter taking control of the super weapon created in junction by the two. The ensuing chaos ensues and you play as the silent super soldier Logan and blah blah blah‚Ä¶ Just let me shoot something already.
The combat in Ghosts is the same as it is in every Call of Duty. A few missions take place in space and underwater to help to vary it a bit but for the most part the game is what you’ve come to expect. You push your way forward through waves of enemies on your way to an objective dashing between cover and avoiding ‚ÄúGRENADAS!!‚ÄĚ As I said, the Call of Duty: Ghosts is fun and that’s because you feel a sense of accomplishment when you complete a mission. In addition it makes you feel like a bad ass, whether it’s using the remote sniper picking off enemies, the classic bullet time door breaches, or piloting a combat helicopter.
What doesn’t make you feel cool is playing as a dog. I love dogs but I’m sorry… It was cool the first few times but it became very annoying very quickly. Then the dog got injured and I had to carry the thing around for a while. Good grief it was a nightmare. I’m sure it was one of those ideas that sounded great in a boardroom somewhere, but in reality? Not so much.
Another issue is the game is short. I beat the entire campaign in five and half hours on the normal difficulty, which I must say seemed a lot easier than past Call of Duty installments. I did go back and do a few missions on the game’s hardest difficulty of Veteran but it still seemed easier. There isn’t much replay value either. Besides a few in-mission decisions, that don’t have any effect on the story overall like in the previous installment, you can do your best to find the data packets hidden throughout the levels. But let’s be honest, the only reason anyone does that is for the achievement.
In the end the campaign will leave you feeling satisfied but the real draw of this game, as with all Call of Duty games, is its multiplayer.
Call of Duty: Ghosts –¬†Multiplayer Mode
With the amount of controversy that surrounds Call of Duty’s multiplayer I feel I owe it to you, the reader, to disclose my experience with them. I’ve played every multiplayer since the hallowed Call of Duty Modern Warfare. With that in mind, I believe that this is one of the best. I was a huge fan of Black Ops II’s pick ten system and Ghosts definitely improves on the system with its squad points. The sheer number of perks is also a welcome addition. I feel free to setup classes to fit my style of play without restriction.
Provided you have a good connection the game play feels crisp and clean. This is due to the fact that the hit detection is phenomenal. Coming off of Black Ops II you will notice that you die a lot faster but the obvious trade off is you kill faster. Quickscoping doesn’t feel over powered and is balanced. Assault Rifles will dominate most of your classes, which is too bad. I thought Black Ops II did a better job balancing out the weapon classes.
The maps are a bit large as compared with previous installments but that is most likely due to the fact that the next-gen consoles will allow for 9v9 matches. The larger maps do allow for less spawn mishaps in the early goings, although I was spawned into enemy fire from time to time. That will most likely be fixed with upcoming patches.
Nothing can compare to Call of Duty when it comes to multiplayer. There’s a reason why every year millions and millions of people buy this game. The formula still works and there have been great additions and tweaks along the way. Ghosts does an exceptional job adding to the legacy.
Call of Duty: Ghosts –¬†Extinction Mode
This is Infinity Ward’s answer to Treyarch’s zombie mode. The main difference is instead of fighting zombies you and your friends are pitted against aliens. The differences don’t stop there. Extinction allows you to choose from different classes. For example you can choose to be a tank and get a boost in health or a weapons specialist to receive a boost in bullet damage. As a result it is much more team oriented than its Zombie brother and also more complex. Whether that is a strength or a weakness is up to you to decide.
Call of Duty Ghosts is an excellent game. The campaign is fast paced and great fun to play. The multiplayer is excellent with enough innovation to keep it fresh and at the same time allowing you that experience that you’ve grown used to. Extinction is a great way to change up the pace that the aforementioned game modes provide. I really wanted to hate this Call of Duty as I’ve experienced a love hate relationship with it over the last 6 years but Ghosts wouldn’t let me.
