You may know Bryan Konietzko and his creative partner Michael Dante DiMartino for the creation of Avatar: The Last Airbender, one of the greatest cartoon shows of all time (this has been proven by science) and its sequel The Legend of Korra, which wrapped up last year. Since then, people have wondered what the pair are going to cook up next. We still don’t know what DiMartino’s up to, but Konietzko revealed to Entertainment Weekly today that his next project is called Threadworlds.
Threadworlds isn’t a cartoon, but a graphic novel. It stars a young scientist named Nova who’s hungry to explore the universe, or at least what she can reach in the immediate vicinity — which would be any of the four other planets that share the same orbit as hers. “Threadworlds has high stakes, relatable characters and a wide range of tones — similar to the work I co-created with Michael,” says Bryan. “And though the focus is on science there will be plenty of action and adventure.”
There will also be lavishly painted backgrounds and inventive character designs, similar to what we’ve come to expect from the co-creator of Avatar. “I was trying to think of a sci-fi idea, and separately a fantasy idea. When the concept [of] Threadworlds popped into my head, I found a way to weave those genres together.”
Look for Konietzko’s Threadworlds on bookstore shelves in 2017. …….2017? How cruel! I can’t even promise you there will still be bookstores then!
