There's nothing I can say about Mary Poppins the film that hasn't been said countless times through the years. The general consensus is that Mary Poppins is one of Walt Disney's masterpieces. Film critic Leonard Maltin considers it the greatest film Walt Disney ever made. And just about everyone agrees that it's just plain fun. There's no excuse for not having experienced this film, especially if you're the owner of a DVD player.
The Mary Poppins DVD uses the new, fully restored, digitally remastered version of the film. The picture and sound quality are top-notch; it's never looked better than it does here. The animated sequences in particular look fantastic; sharply defined with bright and vivid colors. The new surround sound mix is loud and clear. Unfortunately, this DVD is very low on special features. In fact, it has none at all. Not even a theatrical trailer. Of course, it's the presentation of the movie that's most important, but it's not as if there aren't any special features available (as any owner of the archive edition laserdisc set will tell you). Other than the significantly better picture and sound, this disc has little else to offer over the video tape, which is why I can only give it 4 stars. Nevertheless, Mary Poppins is a masterpiece of cinema, it looks and sounds incredible, and it's affordable. There is no reason why this disc shouldn't be in your collection.
