In 2004, Chris Landreth created an animated interpretation of an interview he had with Ryan Larkin (1943-2007). The short went on to win numerous awards, including the Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film in 2005. Larkin, who had been a rising star three decades prior is shown here living out every artist's worst nightmare, destitute and consumed by his own demons. The surrealistic environment and character designs marry well with the weight of the material. Emotional intensity is represented with increasingly distorted and fractured figures. Powerful moments include Larkin's reaction to seeing an old piece of artwork from his film Walking (1969) and Landreth's attempted intervention of a man who did not want to be saved.
