Just in case you haven't heard yet, Green Lantern: Rise of the Manhunters, which is inspired by the upcoming film, is coming to all major video game systems on June 7th. We decided to do a round-up of the existing trailers, press releases and previews. Here we go!
The game will have players taking on the role of Hal Jordan as he battles the Manhunters and feature beat-em-up style combat. Ryan Reynolds, the star of the film, will reprise his role as the voice of Hal.
Not familiar with the mythology? That's okay. I'll try and catch you up. The Guardians of the Universe are an ancient, extraterrestrial race made up of immensely powerful, tiny, blue people. They founded the Green Lantern Corps., which is an intergalactic police force. They run the GL Corps. from their homeworld, Oa. Prior to the creation of the Corps., the Guardians created an android race called the Manhunters. Their programming was flawed and their mission to bring criminals to justice warped into punishing all life. For their transgression, they were exiled. In the game, they've returned with vengeance on their minds.
Here are the existing game trailers, along with some personal commentary:
The first released trailer didn't have as much meat as I'd like, but the did establish that you'll be seeing Hal, Sinestro and Kilowog... And who doesn't want some Kilowog in their game? The next trailer released upped the ante.
This trailer had much more gameplay footage and was the first moment I found myself excited about the game. In the clip, Hal takes on the Manhunters with a variety of attacks that include various types of hammers, baseball bats, giant fists, a flail and a jet plane.
This is, as you may have guessed by the thumbnail, the trailer for the 3DS game. The character art in this trailer was a bit cartoony looking, but the gameplay footage looked pretty cool. There were ground and flying levels shown, along with what looked to be a cut scene. In the ground levels, the backgrounds moved like the old 2D scrollers, but had that added 3rd dimension depth. So, they turned slightly as Hal ran by. The flying scenes had him flying diagonally to attack an enemy. So, perhaps it's not a side scroller all of the time. Most of the clips in this video showed Green Lantern whipping out a power attack.
