I first blogged about The Amazing World Of Gumball when I learned about its existence back in 2009. At the time, I deemed it one of the most surreal animated programs ever proposed. It had a unique visual style, combining 2D and 3D animation with live-action backgrounds, and its cast of characters really stood out. I mean, what other animated program features a blue cat who is best friends with a walking goldfish, and goes to school with classmates such as a banana, a peanut cheerleader and an angry tyrannosaurus rex? I have been following its development very closely since then, and while information is still scarce, I am very confident in the series based on what I have seen so far.
For those who haven’t read my
previous blog post, the series – which was created by Ben Bocquelet – follows a blue cat named Gumball who lives in the quaint little town of Elmore. It’s just like most suburban towns, except that in Elmore, just about everything has potential to come to life: traffic lights, hills, even the sun! The premise allows for an endless possibility of strange characters to appear. Darwin, the one-time class pet who grew legs and stepped out of his tank is a great example of that. It’s evident that the crew put a lot of thought into
Gumball’s world and it will be interesting to see what sorts of strange characters will show up next.
What we know for certain at the moment is that Kwesi Boakye will be providing Darwin’s voice. Most of the characters will be voiced by talent from the United Kingdom, but two other characters, Gumball being one of them, will be voiced by talent from the United States. Turner México
uploaded a promo for their shows in 2011, and roughly four seconds of the series can be seen from 2:41 to 2:44; it’s not much, and I realize that people can’t get a good taste of the series based on that alone, but people should check it out if they have the time to get a sense of how the series will look in motion. the website of Neil Myers, one of the composers working on the series, to hear an orchestral piece that will play during a chase scene in the series. Ultimately, this isn’t much, but isn’t a taste better than nothing?
We don’t yet have a premiere date for the series, but Boulder Media and Studio Soi, two of the studios developing the series, have already finished their work. Another composer also tweeted that sound work on the series has been finished. Based on everything that I have seen, it will likely premiere this year, with this fall being the most proable launch window. I’ll continue to follow the series up until its premiere, as I have really high hopes for this one.
