Entertainment Weekly reports that artist Bernie Wrightson passed away on Saturday from his long battle with brain cancer, according to an announcement his wife gave on his website. He was 68.
Wrightson, along with writer Len Wein, co-created the DC Comics character Swamp Thing in House of Secrets #92. A year later, the two worked launched the Swamp Thing comic book. He also co-created the character Destiny along with Marv Wolfman in Weird Mystery Tales. The character was later used in Neil Gaiman’s run on The Sandman.
His other works include The House of Mystery, Creepy, Eerie, Vampirella, Heavy Metal, and the comic adaptation of Stephen King’s Creepshow. One of his creations for Heavy Metal was the character Captain Sternn, who made his way to the animated 1981 movie Heavy Metal as the title character of his own sequence, where he was voiced by Eugene Levy.
