Is this the moment animation fans have been waiting for? Is one of the all-time greatest classics finally getting its high-definition due?
Yup — it’s now been confirmed that Batman: The Animated Series, one of the most influential programs TV has ever aired period (let alone its influence on cartoons), is undergoing an HD transfer to appear on Blu-Ray sometime next year. The announcement was made during the anniversary panel at NYCC celebrating the 25th birthday of the Timmverse.
Alan Burnett, Kevin Conroy, Tara Strong and Timm himself were in attendance. When the panel got to its Q&A portion, Warner Bros. rep Gary Miereanu held up a Batman: The Animated Series DVD boxset and said they’d be giving it away to some lucky attendees. Then he said this would probably be the last time they would give out this kind of prize because….the Blu-Ray was coming! Thunderous cheers.
That was the extent of the announcement — what we don’t know is what kind of a release it will be. Will WB put out the show in four slices, the way they did back in 2004? Or will they dump the entire thing into an expensive boxset? Will this be available at retail or is it one of those WB Archive exclusives? It’s too early for the answers to such questions.
But we have the most important answer: “yes” to a Blu-Ray. Batman: The Animated Series will be out sometime in 2018.
