Katsucon 2012: The Experience

Katsucon probably has the prettiest host location for any anime convention I’ve been to. The lobby of of the National Harbor Westin hotel looks out over the river, past the new Wilson bridge and on to the monuments of Washington DC; it’s surprisingly easy to get lost in the beauty of the area. The most […]

"Happiness Is ... Peanuts: Friends Forever": A Very Sad Sack of Episodes

Hey, look! It’s another Peanuts collection! Ahhhh, Peanuts, for those times when you really need a dip into the nostalgia pool. Unfortunately it’s more of a nostalgia kiddie pool than anything else. Friends Forever brings together one 30-minute TV special from 1968, You’re In Love Charlie Brown, and an episode of The Charlie Brown and […]

Anime USA 2011: Every Time We Say...Good Bye.....

So we’ve reached the end of another Con year, and the closing of a book, truth be told. 6 Cons, 4 full weekends, 2 day trips…and the final departure from the Crystal City Hyatt Regency. Starting in 2012 Anime USA will be housed at the Marriott Wardman Park in Washington, DC, leaving the Crystal City […]

Otakon 2011: "The Disapperance of Haruhi Suzumiya"

By now I think most everyone is familiar with the world of Haruhi Suzumiya. She’s a young Japanese school girl who just happens to be a demi-god—though she doesn’t know it—who has attracted the attention of an esper (Itsuki Koizumi), a time traveler (Mikuru Asahina), a living, emotionless deus ex machina (Yuki Nagato), and one […]

Otakon 2011: "Trigun: Badlands Rumble": Hello Old Friend

Ahhhh Trigun. Has it really been ten years since you injected the phrase “Love and peace!” into the American anime fan’s dialect? It’s fun sometimes to get a trip back into your memories and feel again a little bit of what it was like when all of this was something new. It can also be […]

Otakon 2011...It's been over 10 years...really?

Over 10 years…holy cow.  Yours truly has been going to Otakon, the biggest anime con on the East Coast and one of the biggest conventions in the country, and certainly the biggest fan-run convention in the country, for over a decade of my existence.  It’s kinda hard to fathom how much time that is till […]

"Antique Bakery": Sweet, Puffy, and LIght as a Beignet

So, there’s this bakery, somewhere in Tokyo. It’s staffed by a rich pretty boy with a dark past looking to meet chicks; his manservant; a former flyweight boxer with a severe sweet tooth; and a world-class pastry chef known at the “Gay of the Demonic Charm” (No, I’m not making that up, that’s what he […]

Anime Boston 2011: Breakin' Records All Over Da Place

Over 19,000.  No, that’s not a Dragon Ball Z joke, that’s the attendance figure for Anime Boston 2011. To give a little contrast, that’s more people than were at the Boston Bruins playoff game the same night.  So yeah, that’s a lot of folks all coming into the Prudential Center and the Hynes Convention Center to […]
