Riverdale had already become a much different place than it used to be back in the 1940s when Archie, Betty, Jughead, Reggie and Veronica initially roamed its streets – but now it’s just getting weird. In the latest issue of the venerable Archie comic book franchise, Archie not only has gay friends but he gets murdered while trying to defend one of them. Of course, this all happens in the textbook “alternate, future universe” that writers like to employ whenever they want to make a splash but not really kill off a character for good. So even though Archie is still okay in normal, present universe, that alternate future Archie is in a load of trouble – unless he has alternate lives in that parallel universe – which would work out nicely for future issues. In the aforementioned murder, Alternate Future Archie takes a bullet for Kevin Kellar [a gay character introduced four years ago]. But who fires the bullet and why? All these tantalizing questions will have to be postponed until next spring when the issue is released.
“Life With Archie” – in which Alternate, Future Archie dies – is currently scheduled to be released in Spring 2015.
