Apple Unveils Movie Download Service; "Cars" Coming Soon

by on September 12, 2006

Apple Computer revealed a long-awaited downloadable digital video service that will sell movies through its iTunes Music Store. Current content will include movies from Walt Disney Company studios, including Disney, Pixar, Touchstone and Miramax, with Pixar’s Cars to be available soon. Resolution of the video files will be 640×480, in “Dolby Surround” sound according to Apple CEO Steve Jobs. Full details can be found at Macworld‘s coverage of Jobs’ special press event and Playlist magazine’s feature article about the movie service.

Apple’s announcement comes in the wake of Amazon.com’s Unbox service, which debuted last Thursday. Unlike Unbox, Apple’s offering will work on both Mac and PC computers and the Apple iPod video.
