Anime Boston 2009-FUNimation Licenses "Spice and Wolf"

by on May 23, 2009

FUNimation has announced the licensing of Spice and Wolf at Anime Boston 2009. Very accurately described as a well-disguised entertaining economics lesson set in a fantasy universe based on middle-ages Europe, Spice and Wolf will be coming to DVD in the winter of 2009-10. FUNimation also announced the English language cast for the upcoming release of Evangelion 1.0-You Are Not Alone. Several of the actors from the previous ADV release will be reprising their roles, including Spike Spencer as Shinji Ikari and Allison Keith-Shipp as Misato. Several roles will be re-cast as well: Toji will be played by Justin Cook, Aoba will be played by Phil Parsons, Ibuki will be played by Caitlin Glass, Risuko will be played by Coleen Clinkenbeard, Fuyutski will be played by Kent Williams, Gendo will be played by John Swaysey, Rei will be played by Brina Palencia, and Pen Pen will be played by Monica Rial. The dub version of the film will premiere at Anime Expo 2009, July 2-5 in Los Angeles, CA.

FUNimation, represented at Anime Boston 2009 by Adam Sheehan, also gave a release date for the first Sgt. Frog DVD set, Season 1 Part 1 on September 22nd, 2009. After doing a series of test screenings of the original language track they decided to undo some of the changes and make it a fairly straight dub including the Gundam and Macross model references. In a final bit of news they announced that the Full Metal Alchemist OVA set will be release sometime in late July to early August, hopefully in time for San Diego Comic Con.

Sheehan stated that FUNimation is on very strong financial footing at the current time. They will be seeing a 17% increase in new product this year over 2008 and an overall drop of only about 3 DVDs — very robust considering how much of 2008 was taken up with rereleases of Geneon products. FUNimation is also showing a profit from their Video On Demand products with Comcast and Verizon as well as their strong internet presence with, among others, Joost, Amazon, Hulu, YouTube, Xbox Live and their own web page, with over 500 episodes available for viewing right now.
