Golden Globes Changes Animation Category Rules

The Hollywood Foreign Press – which operates the annual Golden Globe Awards – has changed the eligibility rules for its animation categories. The first major rule change was defining what constituted an “animated” movie and the Golden Globes settled on a film having to be at least 75% animated – where “the work is done by an animator or through hand-drawings or stop-motion or pixelation” – to qualify as an animated film.

The second major rule change was opening up the animation categories to foreign language entries even if they do not have a USA release by the time of the award ceremony – as long as they have had a release in their home countries. However, foreign-language animated films will no longer be eligible in live-action categories in languages other than English that are made outside of the USA.

The Golden Globes Award Show will take place in Beverly Hills, California, and be shown live on NBC on January 11, 2015.
