Viz Media has published an English-subtitled version of the trailer for Sailor Moon Crystal in advance of its looming premiere online and at Anime Expo in Los Angeles on July 5, 2014. The Sailor Moon Crystal animated series is a new retelling of Naoko Takeuchi’s popular manga from Toei Animation, and currently greenlighted for 26 episodes. Viz has released its own official synopsis to go with the video:
Based on Naoko Takeuchi’s legendary manga series, Sailor Moon Crystal retells the story of Sailor Moon, the Pretty Sailor Guardian of love and justice. Usagi Tsukino may be a little clumsy and a bit of a crybaby, but she’s got spirit. One day this cheerful eighth-grader meets Luna, a black cat with a crescent moon mark on her forehead, who gives Usagi a special brooch that transforms her into Sailor Moon! Now Usagi is on a mission to protect a princess, find her fellow Guardians, and keep the Legendary Silver Crystal out of the hands of the evil Queen Beryl.
The original unsubtitled video was revealed on the Sailor Moon Official youtube channel June 5 to considerable fanfare, surpassing over six million views since its release. The video showcases a sample of animated footage as well as a first look at the character designs for Sailor Moon and her companions.
Sailor Moon Crystal will premiere July 5 as an online broadcast globally on the website Nico Nico, as well as on Hulu in the United States and on Crunchyroll in territories still to be announced. New episodes will premiere on the first and third Saturday of every month.
