Salon Profiles Hayao Miyazaki

Salon has profiled Studio Ghibli co-founder and director Hayao Miyazaki in a lengthy feature article titled “Don’t Call Him the Walt Disney of Japan,” and highlighting the numerous ways that Miyazaki’s work and public statements go counter to conventional wisdom (especially that espoused by Disney and its many competitors in the American market). The article covers Miyazaki’s approach to animation and entertainment in general, touching on the influence of his mother and the way his earliest effort (Nausicaa) had to be made as a manga before it could be produced as anime. It also covers his almost militant pro-environmental attitudes (citing several statements suggesting the ways he views environmental or societal collapse as positive) and the balance between his subversive sensibilities and the fundamental sincerity and warmth in his movies.
