De-hooded as Arrow, Oliver is prepared for torture by Dr. Ivo.

Synopsis: The episode spends 75% of the time on the island in Flashback Mode in an attempt to explain why Slade Wilson has seemingly suddenly shown up at posh Queen Mansion – is it to woo Moira with a hefty campaign contribution for her mayoral bid or torment Oliver and his family in order to keep his island promise? Hmmm….

Details: In one of the few times that we actually directly pick up from where we left off in last week’s episode, Slade attempts to superficially explain his sudden appearance in the Queen Mansion which seems to include some financial purpose that nobody is listening to because we immediately go into…

Flashback Mode, where we see Oliver’s training regimen on the island before a strategy session between Oliver, Sara and Slade [who we will temporarily refer to as the OSS because it sounds cool and it used to be a secret service acronym anyway] to determine how they will be attacking Dr. Anthony Ivo on his convenient nearby floating target freighter. During this flashback, Sara and Oliver think they are burning the last of the magic Mirakuru drug when Sara points out that once they get on the freighter, Oliver will most likely have to kill Ivo because Ivo will attempt to tell Slade about the Sara/Shado execution decision in a desperate attempt to save his life and sic Slade on Oliver. This, of course, is exactly what happens later in the episode so why they [show’s writers] decide to bring out the obvious sledgehammer here 10 minutes into the episode is anybody’s guess.

Needless to say, the plan is all going according to plan as Ivo is distracted by a beachside bonfire lit by Arrow/Oliver and then sends his men out to capture Arrow/Oliver who intentionally trips to allow himself to be captured. While on board the freighter, Ivo proceeds to inject Oliver – who seems to have lost his Arrow outfit somewhere in the freighter – with truth serum to find the whereabouts of Sara and Slade. Oliver spills the beans but a mini-flashback reveals that Sara knew Ivo had truth serum and had already suspected that he would use it on them if they were captured so she had prepared an antidote which Oliver took before embarking on their mission. So Oliver’s bean spillage was a mere ruse allowing Sara and Slade more time to pursue their actual plan of parachuting onto the freighter while Ivo sent his men to the bowels of the ship with Oliver to search for the nonexistent Sara and Slade.

Reverting to the present, Oliver implies Slade has to move on with his life instead of pursuing his vendetta against Oliver and his family and tries to backstab him but Slade easily deflects the attempt before Thea interrupts by coming into the scene. While Moira is showing Slade the Queen family art collection, Slade is busy planting mini secret cameras around the room and Oliver is busy surreptitiously calling the Arrow Lair and exposing the conversation to all – with Sara figuring out that the voice they are hearing is that of Slade Wilson – and then clues everybody in as to who that is before putting the team in action and devising a plan to rescue Oliver.

Oliver's cell phone alerts the Arrow Lair to spring into action in an attempt to rescue him from Slade at the Queen Mansion.

Back to the island, Sara and Oliver liberate the freighter’s prisoner population while Slade goes on a Mirakuru-fueled rampage to track down Ivo but Oliver eventually finds him first and allows him to spout off as foreshadowed in the first 10 minutes. Slade, of course, overhears everything and immediately goes after Oliver and seems on the verge of killing him until – miraculously! – the freighter runs aground and knocks everybody askew. Oliver and Ivo both temporarily escape in the chaos but Slade catches Oliver and tosses him in the freighter slammer, then kills the ship’s captain and proclaims himself to be the new captain.

Back to a last fling in the present, Sara, Diggle and Roy converge on the Queen Mansion with a plan to take Slade down via Diggle’s high-powered rifle as Slade exits the mansion but, alas, Slade has it all figured out and one of his thugs konks Diggle on the back of the head before he gets a chance for his Slade kill shot.

Finally, for the scenario roundup – yeehaw! – we return to the island where Slade has nabbed Ivo and cuts off his hand in retribution for shooting Shado then spares Oliver because he promises to make him suffer via his family for choosing to protect Sara from Ivo instead of Shado. The end shot of the episode shows Slade keeping an eye – his only good one – on Queen Mansion via all his mini secret cameras he has placed around the joint.

The Poop and Skinny: Early in the episode, Slade offers Moira some fine Australian rum which most certainly has to be Bundaberg “Bundy” rum – the most well-known rum from Down Under.

Arrow/Oliver tries to backstab Slade with a screwdriver. A screwdriver. Really?!? After all they have been through, this seems like a plausible plan? – credibility issue #547.

Arrow will return next week and give Oliver time to devise his Plan B against Slade while Diggle recovers from being konked on the head and takes up Lyla’s offer to join the “Suicide Squad” episode on March 12.

Burning question for the next episode of “Arrow” – Since Slade’s car of choice is a black Lamborghini Aventador, will Arrow be getting a Huracan as his ride in future episodes?

As always – it is important to remember that, at any juncture where the situation appears to be dire for Arrow/Oliver and his very life may be in danger – there would be no more show [and therefore no more money to be made] if he were to die. You continue to be welcome.
