"The Lego Movie" Continues Box Office Domination with $50M in Week 2
Warner Bros’ The Lego Movie took in $50.015 million in ticket sales in its second week of release, handily fending off competition from About Last Night and RoboCop, both premiering last week and both remakes of 1980’s movies. The ticket sales for The Lego Movie represent a 27.6% drop from the premiere weekend, which is smaller than usual for recent movies, and it set a new record for ticket sales for the President’s Day weekend with $63.5 million over the 4-day span. In contrast, About Last Night took in $25.69 million in sales, which is the best opening for a romantic comedy since 2012’s Think Like a Man ($33.6 million) and its relatively small budget means the movie is already in the black. RoboCop (which opened on February 12) took in $21.7 million over the weekend, representing an uptick from its slow opening but still puts it below many other President’s Day action movie openings.
