Animation Magazine Speaks with Writer Anne D. Bernstein

Animation Magazine has interviewed writer Anne D. Bernstein, who rose to prominence as a writer on the TV series Daria and has credits on other hit shows ranging from The Backyardigans to Angelo Rules. In the interview, Bernstein fields numerous questions about the relative absence of women in writer’s rooms and casts for animated shows, noting that, “Being a television writer—especially in comedy—means you have to learn to speak up,” and the personality traits required to do that are “traits not always encouraged in women.” She also notes how she pays more attention to the female characters in a show rather than the number of female writers, adding, “Characters are usually ‘male by default,’ females outnumbered about six to one, and no one seems to notice until I point it out. And the girl is inevitably pink.”
