Animation Dominates Japan 2013 Box Office Charts

by onJanuary 13, 2014

The Hollywood Reporter notes that the 2013 annual box office results in Japan are dominated by animation, with 7 out of the top 10 grossing films of the year being animated, and one prominently featuring a CGI character in a live-action movie. Hayao Miyazaki’s Kaze Tachinu (The Wind Rises) was the #1 top grossing film in the country with a $116.1 million gross, followed by Monsters University ($89 million) and Ted ($41.5 million). The #4 title was the latest Doraemon movie, whose success last year propelled it past Gojira/Godzilla as the most-watched franchise series in Japanese film history. Additional animated movies included the latest installations of Detective Conan, Pokemon, and Dragon Ball, with Disney’s Wreck-It Ralph (retitled Sugar Rush for Japanese release) taking the #10 spot.
