"Despicable Me 2" Shows Hefty Sales on DVD and Blu-ray
Universal/Illumination Entertainment’s Despicable Me 2 has posted incredibly strong home video sales numbers in its first week of release, selling more than 4.5 million units on DVD and Blu-ray (56% of which was on the high-definition format). The numbers are comparable to those during DVD’s peak sales period in the early 2000’s, and matches the movie’s status as the second highest-grossing film of the year (with $367.4 million in US ticket sales, behind only Iron Man 3‘s domestic take of $409 million).
In a related story, The Hollywood Reporter spoke with Illumination’s head Chris Meledandri, who has now produced two Disney/Pixar and DreamWorks-sized hits at half the budget; Meledandri discusses how both his parents were “disruptors,” describing how his father broke rules repeatedly in the New York men’s fashion world and his mother’s activism affected his youth. Next up for Illumination is the spinoff movie The Minions, set for a July 10, 2015 release.
