"Fantastic Mr. Fox" To Get Criterion Collection Release

FantasticMrFoxCriterionThe Criterion Collection’s solicitations for February 2014 have revealed a listing for director Wes Anderson’s 2009 film Fantastic Mr. Fox. An adaptation of the children’s novel by Roald Dahl, the movie tells the story of “a clever, quick, nimble, and exceptionally well-dressed” Fox who settles down, only to be tempted to return to the chicken-stealing ways of his past when he and his family move to a new home nearby a trio of farmers. Criterion’s release of Fantastic Mr. Fox is its first for an animated feature film since its release of Akira on laserdisc in 1995.

A work of stop-motion animation, Fantastic Mr. Fox was critically acclaimed and in 2010 earned nominations for the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature and Best Original Score, as well as the Golden Globe Award for Best Animated Feature. Criterion has announced an assortment of extras and details for its release:

  • New digital master, approved by director Wes Anderson, with 5.1 surround DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack on the Blu-ray
  • Audio commentary featuring Anderson
  • Storyboard animatics for the entire film
  • Footage of the actors voicing their characters, puppet construction, stop-motion setups, and the recording of the score
  • Interviews with cast and crew
  • Puppet animation tests
  • Photo gallery of puppets, props, and sets
  • Animated awards acceptance speeches
  • Audio recording of author Roald Dahl reading the book on which the film is based
  • Gallery of Dahl’s original manuscripts
  • Discussion and analysis of the film
  • Stop-motion Sony robot commercial by Anderson
  • One Blu-ray and two DVDs, with all content available in both formats
  • PLUS: A booklet featuring a new essay; a 2002 article on Dahl’s Gipsy House by Anderson; White Cape, a comic book used as a prop in the film; and drawings, original paintings, and other ephemera

The Criterion release of Fantastic Mr. Fox will be released on February 18th, 2014 at $39.95 SRP.
