"Space Dandy" Gets Worldwide Broadcasts, World TV Premiere Set For Toonami on Adult Swim in January 2014 (Updated)

SpaceDandyScreencap1aA newly released press release from Bandai Visual and a post at the official Toonami tumblr have revealed that Studio BONES’ upcoming sci-fi comedy Space Dandy has been picked up for distribution and television broadcast in many areas around the world. The series, which reunites director Shinichiro Watanabe (Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo) with many creative staff associated with Cowboy Bebop, tells the story of an adventurous space explorer with “no worries” and his two sidekicks as they seek out unexplored alien worlds for profit. FUNimation Entertainment has acquired home video, digital, theatrical and merchandising rights to Space Dandy for North America, while Madman Entertainment has acquired the license for Australia and New Zealand.

Additionally, in an unprecedented development, Space Dandy will receive a televised broadcast in “numerous countries” concurrent with its run in Japan. Adult Swim’s Toonami block on Cartoon Network will broadcast the world premiere for Space Dandy in English in January at 11:30 PM Eastern Time, prior to the series’ debut in Japan. The English dub for Space Dandy is being produced by FUNimation Entertainment. The series has also been confirmed for broadcast on Animax Asia except for Japan and Korea, with details to be announced at a later time. Negotiations are ongoing for the broadcast in Australia and New Zealand, while Bandai Visual’s press release also confirms that negotiations for the distribution of Space Dandy in European countries and in Korea are underway.

Update, 1:50 PM: A report at Anime News Network notes that FUNimation has confirmed that in addition to the TV broadcast, it will stream Space Dandy online in Japanese with English subtitles. Additionally, this article previously stated that Space Dandy was announced for a 26 episode run. This was sourced to the Toonami tumblr announcement, but that text has since been removed from the post.

Update #2, 2:39 PM: Toonami’s reference to the premiere date of January 4th, 2014 for Space Dandy has also been removed. However, mention of the airtime of 11:30 PM and the fact of the world premiere remains.

TO BE BROADCAST SIMULTANEOUSLY WORLDWIDE!

Tokyo, Japan, October 25, 2013 – Bandai Visual Co., Ltd., a leader in the development and production of Japanese animation, announced the simultaneous TV broadcast of “Space Dandy” in Japan, North America and Asia, starting January 2014! This marks the first time that a Japanese TV anime series will be televised simultaneously in numerous countries.

North America

English production will be handled by FUNimation Entertainment, a Group 1200 Media Company, in association with the Space Dandy Production Committee in Japan, and the series will be aired on Adult Swim in North America in English. FUNimation has acquired the home entertainment, digital, theatrical, and merchandise rights to the series.

The series will be aired on Animax Asia in various countries in Asia except for Japan and Korea. The countries which Animax Asia’s service covers will be announced soon. ODEX is the Asian licensee of the series. ODEX and Animax Asia also announced the appearance of two voice cast from “Space Dandy” at AFA Singapore, which will be held from November 8th to 10th at Suntec International Convention & Exhibition Centre. Junichi Suwabe (voice of Dandy) and Yurin (voice of Honey) will hold a stage event as well as autograph sessions at the AFA booths of ODEX and Animax Asia.

Oceania

It was also announced that Madman Entertainment acquired the license of “Space Dandy” for Australia and New Zealand, and the series will premiere simultaneously online in these countries as it airs on Japanese TV. TV broadcast plans in Oceania are currently under negotiation. Bandai Visual is currently in discussion with companies in Europe and Korea. Announcements for these countries will be made soon.
