New "Sonic the Hedgehog" Animated Series Coming in Fall 2014

SonicBoomThe Sega Blog has announced the production of a new animated series starring the video game company’s iconic hero Sonic the Hedgehog, tentatively titled Sonic Boom. The series is planned to premiere in the fall of 2014 on Cartoon Network in the United States and on CANAL J and GULLI in France, and SEGA is actively pursuing distribution deals for other parts of the world. SEGA described Sonic Boom this way in its announcement:

Sonic Boom is a character-driven comedy that leaves a trail of robot wreckage in its smoldering wake. The series centers on Sonic, his best friend and sidekick, Tails, their never-ending search for adventure, and their battles with Sonic’s arch-nemesis, Dr. Eggman. Rounding out the ensemble are fan favorites Knuckles and Amy Rose, plus a rogue’s gallery of enemies—some familiar to Sonic fans and some brand-new.

Sonic Boom will feature CG animation and begin with an initial run of fifty-two 11-minute episodes. SEGA Executive producers Evan Baily, Donna Friedman Meir and Jane McGregor developed the new series, while Baily and Co-Executive Producer Bill Frieberger (The Simpsons, Drawn Together) are credited as showrunners. Takashi Iizuka, the current head of Sonic Team, is said to be overseeing the project “…to ensure that it’s true to the Sonic characters and universe.” Sonic Boom is being co-produced by Sega of America Inc. and the French production studio Genao Productions.
