Disney to Shut Down Pixar Canada Studio
Variety reports that the Walt Disney Company will be shutting down its branch of Pixar Animation Studios based out of Vancouver, Canada, focusing its animation efforts solely in the main Pixar campus in Emeryville, CA. The studio was originally able to take advantage of tax incentives offered in Vancouver, and the shuttering of the studio was announced after changes made those incentives less beneficial, although a Pixar spokesperson did not comment on the connection between those two events and issued a statement saying, “The team at Pixar Canada is incredibly talented and we are so proud of the excellent work we have produced there. However, as we look at the creative and business needs of our studio, we’ve made the decision to refocus our efforts and resources under one roof in Emeryville and will be closing the studio in Vancouver.”
An unknown number of jobs will be lost as a result of the studio closing. The Vancouver studio had produced several shorts for Disney, including “Air Mater,” the Toy Story shorts “Small Fry” and “Partysaurus Rex,” and the upcoming Halloween special Toy Story of Terror.
