The Amazing World Of Gumball – “The Game” Recap

Gumball

While making the boys clean their room, Nicole discovers a version of the Dodge or Dare board game that they created. When she begins to play it against their will, reality starts to get warped as a result, and the only way to put an end to it is for one of the Wattersons to make it to the end.

Gumball Game 1

This episode exceeded my expectations. I thought it would be fun going in, as I tend to enjoy any episode that borrows its plot from Jumanji, but it was executed in a manner that really reminded me of “The Job”. I loved “The Job”, and like it this episode played with reality in such a way that would be more common in an episode of Regular Show. Little things like Anais getting stuck on pause are so wonderful in this show, as the effects really seal the deal and it adds so much to the humor. When you never know what direction the show is going to go in, it leaves you at the edge of your seat, and the next thing you know, Richard is dating a sheep and awkwardly orders lamb for dinner.

Gumball Game 2

I’ve said before that I prefer episodes that get all of the Wattersons involved, and that still holds true today. While I would have liked for Anais to be a bit more active, as she spent most of the episode marooned on the couch, I feel that the amount of screen time for each member of the family was adequate. I particularly liked how they handled Nicole, as while they referenced her competitive nature and her desire to win, she didn’t put that before the welfare of her family and she quickly lost interest in being the one to win. I really liked this, as she went too far in “The Fridge”. I have no problem with Nicole being crazy competitive, as long as she always puts her family first and doesn’t cross that line. I’m glad this episode turned out the way that it did and it was easily one of the better episodes of the season.
