SDCC2013: "Batman - Arkham Origins" Preview
Toonzone participated in a demo of the upcoming Batman: Arkham Origins during the San Diego Comic-Con 2013. The game will be available on the Wii U, PS3, Xbox 360 and PC on October 25, 2013.
Arkham Origins takes place approximately seven years prior to the events of Batman: Arkham Asylum. A younger, rough-around-the-edges Batman faces a defining moment in his early career as Gotham’s protector. It’s Christmas Eve and the Black Mask has put a fifty million dollar hit on Batman’s head. This has set some of DC’s most dangerous assassins after the Dark Knight with one evening to take him down.
Roger Craig Smith and Troy Baker have taken on the roles of younger Batman and the Joker respectively. Both voice actors expressed great admiration and respect for Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill during the Arkham Origins panel at the San Diego Comic-Con. Conroy and Hamill are well-known for their work as Batman and the Joker in the previous Arkham games as well as their iconic performances in Batman: The Animated Series.
Players familiar with Batman: Arkham City will be able to jump right in to Arkham Origins. The open world format will allow gamers to explore and take on side missions or push the main plot forward by sticking to their core mission. The game is two times the size of Arkham City. As such, the developers have incorporated the Batwing as a way of getting around the city quickly.
Arkham Origins features a mix of fighting and investigating. Batman will use his detective skills to assess crime scenes from multiple angles. There are new enemy types which include armored bad guys and skilled martial artists that are capable of countering Batman’s moves.
One of the new weapons shown in the demo was the Remote Claw. It can be used to connect two points together. This will allow Batman to more strategically attack his foes by pulling one thug into another or hanging a bad guy from a gargoyle. The game features a more detailed experience system in which players will be able to choose their path of upgrades. More game play additions will be announced as the game’s release date nears.
The Case Files system in Arkham Origins showcases the skills of the World’s Greatest Detective and allows players to extensively investigate crime scenes. The sensors in Batman’s cowl send information back to the Bat Computer which then constructs a 3D representation of the crime scene. You’ll be able to rewind and play forward the reconstruction from multiple angles. This will allow the Batman to further scan, gather clues, follow evidence to other related locations and then solve the crimes he comes across while on patrol.
During Comic-Con, Warner Bros. Interactive also revealed the latest assassin to make it into Batman: Arkham Origins, Copperhead. Below you’ll find the reveal trailer.
As previously announced, players who pre-order the game will be able to play as Deathstroke in challenge mode. A Knightfall and 1960s Batman skin will be available as a PS3 exclusive. A DC One Million Batman and Worst Nightmare skin will become accessible to those who complete 100% of the game’s goals.
Batman: Arkham Origins will be available for play on the Wii U, PS3, Xbox 360 and PC. Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate, the handheld version developed by Armature Studio, will be available for PlayStation Vita and the Nintendo 3DS. The game will release on all platforms worldwide on 25 Oct 2013. For more information, visit the official website.
