Comic-Con 2013: Day One Schedule Highlights
The Day One Comic-Con 2013 schedule has been officially released and, as usual, there are far too many items of interest than it is humanly possible to see barring a scientific revelation allowing you to clone your body into at least three different versions of itself so that it may attend all the cool events. But for now, here are the Day One highlights that you will have to pick and choose from if you happen to make it to San Diego in two weeks time…
Day One morning highlights – the opening 10am salvos offer a triple play. You can decide between going to Marvel’s workshop purporting to tell you “how to break into comics the Marvel way” [Room 7AB] or a seminar featuring “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” creator Kevin Eastman [Room 9] or a Mattel seminar detailing the evolution of the modern action figure [Room 25 ABC]. A mere 30 minutes later in Room 6 BCF, there will be a 35th anniversary celebration of “Battlestar Galactica” with a scheduled appearance from the original Captain Apollo [Richard Hatch] along with some “surprise” guest appearances which may or may not be Dirk Benedict [Lt. Starbuck] since it would really be a surprise if Commander Adama showed up due to the fact that Lorne Greene has been dead for 26 years now. At 11am, a seminar in the Indigo Ballroom asks the question that is on everybody’s mind – “Video Games to Movies: Is the Golden Age Upon Us?” Helping to answer that question will be experts from Blur Studios and EA Entertainment. The morning session concludes with the 14th Annual Animation Show of Shows featuring the 10 best animated shorts from around the world at 11:50 am in Hall H.
Day One afternoon highlights begin promptly at noon with a celebration of “Transformers” 30th anniversary in Room 25 ABC and back in the Indigo Ballroom, a celebration of the comedy legends of TV Land that will include stars of current and recently past TV Land exclusive television series. Those should keep you tided over for 45 minutes until you’ll have to make an executive decision on whether to go to Room 6 DE where the cast and crew of “Annoying Orange” will be going into detail about the production of their popular show on the Cartoon Network or Room 6A where executives from Hanna-Barbera will be talking about the origins of superhero humor in cartoons from the 1960s including everybody’s favorite superhero turned into a humorous talk show host – Space Ghost. At 1pm in Room 6 BCF, “Batman: Arkham Origins” [release date, October 25, 2013] creators will reveal the latest developments in the popular video game. This should give you enough time to prepare for the arrival of the cast and crew of Comedy Central’s “The Workaholics” at 2pm in the Indigo Ballroom, who will provide you with all the triathlon drinking tips you may require. James Spader makes an appearance at 3pm in Room 6A to give you his thoughts on an advance screening of “The Blacklist”. Then skedaddle your butt over to Hall H at 3:50pm for an advance screening of “Ender’s Game” featuring Harrison Ford – no “Star Wars” questions, though.
Day One evening highlights start at 5pm in Room 7AB with a detailed look behind the scenes of the creation of Xbox One-exclusive video game “Ryse: Son of Rome” as it Crytek game creators will talk about the development of the game and its central character Marius Titus and visitors will receive a free limited edition printed comic book. Also at 5pm in the Indigo Ballroom will be John Barrowman [aka The Dark Archer from the CW series “Arrow”] who will talk about his past [“Doctor Who”], present [“Arrow”] and future projects. As if that weren’t enough, the 5pm hour also has a collection of veteran animators from classic 1960s cartoons [“Scooby Doo, Pink Panther, SuperFriends, Josie and the Pussycats”] in Room 9. At 6pm in Room 6 BCF, “South Park” co-creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone discuss their upcoming video game, “South Park: The Stick of Truth”. At 7pm, Warner Bros and DC Comics team up in Room 6 DE to give you a first look at the evil villains in DC Comics. Finally, at 8pm in Room 6A, there will be a Superhero Kung Fu Extravaganza showcasing all the greatest martial arts movie action scenes.
Comic-Con 2013 will be held at the San Diego Convention Center from July 18-21, 2013.
