For what seems like years going on eons, the specter of a possible “Justice League” feature film has hovered above Earth, preparing to pounce with typical movie blockbuster power. But for a multitude of reasons – at least one of them being the fact that Disney’s purchase and subsequent empowering of Marvel Comics allowed Marvel to beat DC Comics to the blockbuster punch with its massive “Avengers” flick last year – the film has not received a full endorsement yet from Warner Bros. This may have changed slightly in the past few weeks as it was announced that retailer Target would begin selling Justice League-themed merchandise this summer, presumably in advance of a full-fledged flick. The original Justice League roster consisted of Aquaman, Batman, Flash, Green Lantern, Martian Manhunter, Superman and Wonder Woman – and were later joined by Green Arrow and Cyborg – but Target’s roster gives the boot to Green Arrow and Martian Manhunter, feeding speculation about both the roster and the potential casting choices. Warner Bros. has plans to produce a “Justice League” film but the scope and depth of such a film seems to be hinged upon the success of the upcoming Superman franchise movie reboot “Man of Steel”. If “Man of Steel” – with Henry Cavill as Superman – is successful, director Zack Snyder has been targeted as the likely director of “Justice League”.
“Justice League” is tentatively slotted for a June 2015 release.
