The Hollywood Reporter reports that actor and comedian Jonathan Winters passed away Thursday in his home in Montecito, California of natural causes. He was 87.
Winters was best known for playing a series of characters including Maude Frickert. His movie roles included It’s A Mad Mad Mad Mad World, The Russians Are Coming! The Russians Are Coming!, The Fish That Saved Pittsburgh, and The Flintstones. He also appeared on an episode of The Twilight Zone as a pool shark playing against Jack Klugman, and played Robin Williams’s son Mearth on the final season of Mork & Mindy.
Winters voice roles include playing himself and Maude Frickert on an episode of The New Scooby-Doo Movies, and later played Maude again on Wait Till Your Father Gets Home, He also did voices for shows like Linus! The Lion Hearted, The Completely Mental Misadventures of Ed Grimley, Tiny Toon Adventures, Mayor Cod on Fish Police, Coach Cadaver on Gravedale High, and was the voice of Grandpa Smurf on The Smurfs. In 2011, Winters provided the voice of Papa Smurf in the live-action Smurfs movie, and reprised his role for the upcoming sequel due later this year.
In 2000, Winters was the recipient of the Kennedy Center’s Mark Twain honor for humor.
