Comedy Central Cancels "Futurama"

Entertainment Weekly reports that Comedy Central has declined to renew Futurama beyond the current seventh season. The Emmy Award-winning comedy series is slated to end at 140 episodes, 52 of which were produced for the sixth and seventh seasons since Comedy Central reached a deal with Fox to revive the program in 2009. Comedy Central will begin premiering the final 13 episodes starting June 19th, 2013 at 10 PM.

Series creator Matt Groening and executive producer David X. Cohen are reportedly not surprised by the news, and options are being explored to find a new home for Futurama. However, at this time there are “no serious talks” going on. “We would love to continue. We have many more stories to tell,” said Groening on that subject and the final episodes of the 7th season. “But if we don’t, this is a really great way to go out… I think these episodes are the best ones we’ve ever done.”
