At its New York Comic Con panel, Viz Media announced its plans to release Nobuhiro Watsuki’s Rurouni Kenshin: Restoration in “Spring/Summer 2013″. An alternate and condensed retelling of Watsuki’s original story about a former assassin questing for penance in Japan’s Meiji Era, the comic was created to commemorate the live-action film adaptation released in Japanese theaters in 2012. The comic is currently serialized monthly in Viz’s digital magazine, Shonen Jump Alpha.
Additionally Viz has picked up another Shonen Jump Alpha title, Kouhei Horikoshi’s Barrage. The first volume is dated for March 2013. Coming on 4/9/13 is the manga version of Tiger & Bunny, an original superhero action anime created by Sunrise, featuring art by Mizuki Sukokibara and character design by Masakazu Katsura. August 2013 will also see the release of a Tiger & Bunny comic anthology, featuring a series of short stories featuring work by many different manga artists.
Other new licenses from Viz include graphic novels for Monsuno, starting in Spring 2013, Sunny from Eisner Award winner Taiyo Matsumoto (Tekkonkinkreet) in Spring/Summer 2013, and a hardcover release for Takehiko Inoue’s Pepita on 4/16/13. Viz will also release four volumes of “Uglydoll Books” in July 2013, written by Travis Nichols and David Horvath and featuring art from David Horvath, Sun-Min Kim, Ian McGinty, Travis Nichols, James Kochalka, J. Otto Seibold, Mike Kelly and Philip C. Jackson.
