Classic Anime "Princess Knight", "Rose of Versailles" Coming to DVD in 2013
Wednesday afternoon, Right Stuf, Inc. announced that it would be releasing the 1967 series Princess Knight on DVD under its Nozomi Entertainment label. The 52-episode anime is based on the fantasy adventure manga by Osamu Tezuka, which was translated into English and released by Vertical Publishing last year. The story follows the adventures of Sapphire, a princess born with the hearts of a boy and a girl thanks to the mistake of a young angel-in-training named Tink. Sapphire is raised as a prince so she can inherit her father’s throne and keep rule of her kingdom away from the villainous Duke Duralumon, the King’s closest relative. Sapphire has to deal with the conniving plots of the Duke as well as the machinations of the devilish witch Madam Hell with some help from Tink, who has come to Earth to watch over her and fix his mistake.
Right Stuf will release the 52-episode Princess Knight series in two limited edition DVD sets in 2013. Because of the materials that are available the DVDs will include edited broadcast footage from the series’ syndicated run on television, presented with English and Spanish audio.
In September Right Stuf also licensed the 1979 anime Rose of Versailles, a 40-episode adapation of Riyoko Ikeda’s seminal shojo manga. The series tells the story of Oscar Fran√ßois de Jarjayes, the daughter of the commander of France’s palace guards. Raised as a man by her father, she is eventually appointed to guard Marie Antoinette in the years leading up to the beginning of the French Revolution. The series will be released with Japanese audio and English subtitles in 2013.
The first episode of Rose of Versailles is being streamed by the video website Viki.com, as well as on Youtube from Nozomi Entertainment. Viki will stream more episodes ahead of the DVD release starting on December 6th, 2012.
