Variety has taken a look at Cartoon Network’s sponsoring of more offbeat animated fare, including Adventure Time and Regular Show, and the new newly announced series Uncle Grandpa and Steven Universe. The article credits Chief Content Officer Rob Sorcher for championing these new shows created by a generation of animators who grew up with Cartoon Network’s first wave of original content like The Powerpuff Girls and Johnny Bravo. Sorcher was also behind the establishment of the Cartoonstitute, although he admits that he doesn’t always “get” the material that the network’s artists come up with, and that Adventure Time was initially met with skepticism by many Cartoon Network executives.
