Otakon 2012: Yuuka Nanri Panel
Voice actress and singer Yuuka Nanri made an appearance at Otakon 2012. She has most recently played the role of Ritsuko Mukae in Kids on the Slope, and previous roles have included Henrietta in Gunslinger Girl, several roles in the My_HiME/Otome series, and Bubbles in the Japanese dubbing on The Powerpuff Girls. She has also sung songs in a number of shows including Gundam SEED, .hack//QUANTUM, and Ookami Kakushi among others, and has just started a career as a solo singer with her first release. At the start of the panel she was asked to sing a few bars from “These Are a Few of My Favorite Things” and did a wonderful job after the interpreter looked up the lyrics.
She began her career as an acolyte of Yuki Kaijura, who Ms. Nanri described as “someone from a higher dimension.” Ms. Nanri worked with Ms. Kaijura in high school before she became a vocal recroding artist, but had not worked with Yoko Kanno before the Kids on the Slope session. She said that Mrs. Kanno was a great help in the sessions by playing on the piano. For her part in Kids on the Slope, Ms. Nanri would receive her scripts ahead of time, do a read through by herself followed by a full cast rehearsal and the recording session. She was really excited to be a part of Kids on the Slope as it is set in Kyushu, the area of Japan she is from. She also read the manga the show is based on and was very happy to see it come to life.
Until very recently she had not performed on stage as a solo act, saying she always had bad stage fright. The members of her band have helped her get over that, for which she is very thankful. A few very impressive clips from her live solo debut at a small club were shown, which will be part of the deluxe package for her upcoming CD release. Ms. Nanri also spoke about some of her other roles. When she was cast in My-Otome she was sure it was a mistake as she had only played “good girl” roles before and it was the first time she had played a “bad girl”. As it turned out she very much enjoyed playing a “bad girl,” adding that her favorite line was, “You make me want to throw up.” She also played the role of Saori in Wandering Son and came to love the role the more she played it. Miss Nanri ended her panel by thanking all of her fans here and hoping that we will continue to support her in the future.
