Political Critics Sharpening Axes for "Lorax"

Today’s The Los Angeles Times surveys the eco-political controversies swirling around Dr. Seuss’s The Lorax.

The article describes the predictable criticism the film has received from conservative groups as ecological indoctrination, but notes the producers have also received strong criticism from the liberal side of the spectrum for their partnership with Mazda, giving the car company’s CX-5 SUV the “Certified Truffula Tree Seal of Approval.” Universal defends the choice, calling the automobile “a really good choice for consumers to make who may not have the luxury or the money to buy electric or buy hybrid.”

The article also notes that the original book has come in for sharp criticism, with the science journal Nature last year calling the title character “a parody of a misanthropic ecologist.”
