Actor Harry Shearer Comments on "Simpsons" Season 24 Salary Dispute
Simpsons voice actor Harry Shearer (who performs Montgomery Burns, Ned Flanders, and many other supporting characters on the show) has made the first public statement on the reports that Fox is requiring a substantial pay cut for the actors before it can renew it for a 24th season. Of the estimated $8 million per year the main Simpsons actors earn, Shearer stated that the salaries, “while ridiculous by any normal standard, pale in comparison to what the show’s profit participants have been taking home.”
He added that he offered an even more substantial pay cut in return for a small share of eventual profits, saying, “My representatives broached this idea to Fox yesterday, asking the network how low a salary number I would have to accept to make a profit participation feasible. My representatives were told there was no such number.” Shearer’s statement ended by saying, “I think it’s fair to say that we’ve had a great run and no one should feel sorry for any of us,” but the alternatives left were “to cancel the show or fire me for having the gall to try to save the show.” Fox declined to comment in response to Shearer’s statement.
