October 2011 Highlights

This award-winning animated science adventure series starring Lily Tomlin as Ms. Frizzle is one of television’s longest-running children’s science series. In it, Ms. Frizzle and her class take cliff-hanging science adventures straight into the human body, to the center of the earth, even to outer space. When you’re on the Bus, you never know what will happen!

WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 5
ON QUBO

** Choice for Halloween ** — “THE MAGIC SCHOOL BUS IN THE HAUNTED HOUSE”
The class is thrilled about its upcoming concert at the Sound Museum — until they discover the spooky mansion is more of a thrill than they bargained for. Featuring Carol Channing as the voice of Cornelia C. Contralto.

LATEST MAGIC SCHOOL BUS NEWS:
· In October 2011, this beloved children’s brand celebrates its 25th Anniversary, supported by a major marketing campaign. A live stage show entitled “The Magic School Bus Live: THE CLIMATE CHALLENGE” launches later this fall.
· Scholastic Media announced the release of The Magic School Bus: Oceans for Nintendo DS, available at retail this fall for $19.99. The brand will also release a new “Touch & Tilt” app about dinosaurs, available later this fall for the iPad, iPhone and iPod touch.

The Emmy Award-winning WordGirl airs Mon.-Fri. on PBS KIDS GO! (Check local listings). Whenever there is trouble in The City, fifth-grader Becky Botsford transforms into WordGirl and uses super strength and amazing vocabulary to stop quirky villains in their tracks. Designed to enrich children’s vocabulary, instill a love of language, and foster better reading comprehension, WordGirl is in its third season on PBS KIDS GO!

While WordGirl tries to find a remedy for the hiccups, Chuck tries to get his condiment ray fixed by a new villain, Hal Hardbargain. Can WordGirl stop Chuck’s latest crime spree or will her hiccups stop her first?

Mr. and Mrs. Botsford leave Becky to babysit TJ to celebrate their anniversary at a local ice cream parlor. When the Whammer strikes the same parlor, Becky must find a way to save her parents and babysit TJ, all while keep her secret identity intact.

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 14

** Premiere ** — “CRIME IN THE KEY OF V” (plus one other WordGirl adventure)
Determined to be the best at everything, the villainous Victoria Best (Kristen Schaal, in a return to the show) tries to become a superhero in the city and put WordGirl out of commission for good. When Victoria captures Amazing Rope Guy with her tractor-beam eyes, WordGirl may have to admit she’s second best.

Lively and colorful, this series chronicles the adventures, and misadventures, of ten-year-old siblings Maya and Miguel Santos, with their family and friends in a richly diverse neighborhood. ** Choice for Hispanic Heritage Month ** — “FAMILY TIME”
When Maya decides her family members are in need of quality spent together, she and Miguel plan a camping trip to a state park. Upon arriving arrives at their campsite, the family realizes the kids forgot some essentials, and the rain, wildlife, and a capsized boat threaten to make their trip a disaster. In the end, however, la familia Santos discovers the only thing they really need is time together.

Maya & Miguel presents culture and language learning as fun, relevant and rewarding for all children. The program places a special emphasis on the Latino population and is a great choice to honor Hispanic Heritage Month. Sprinkled through the series are values of friendship, family and a positive, culturally rich portrayal of Latino family, language and cultures.

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 29
ON UNIVISION

** Choice for Halloween/Day of the Dead ** — “LA CALAVERA”
When Maya wants to add oomph to her school presentation on Mexico , she consults Abuela Elena, who allows her to borrow a prized possession: a calavera — or skull made of sugar — used in annual Day of the Dead celebrations. Maya’s presentation goes well, but somehow she loses the calavera. Will her frantic search turn up the missing treasure? And what will she tell Abuela?

LATEST MAYA & MIGUEL NEWS:
· Episodes of Maya & Miguel premiered on Univision Network’s “Planeta U” children’s educational/informational programming block September 10. “Planeta U” airs three hours on Saturday mornings and includes segments that promote literacy, reading, problem-solving skills, respect for others, self-esteem, and pride in Hispanic identity – values infused into each Maya & Miguel episode.

Follow Clifford and his owner, Emily Elizabeth, as they help friends on everyday adventures that teach life lessons through Clifford’s Big Ideas. An award-winning, top-rated series on PBS KIDS ®, Clifford the Big Red Dog airs Mon.-Fri. (Check local listings).

TUESDAY, OCTOBER 25
ON PBS KIDS

“FRIENDS, MORNING, NOON, AND NIGHT”
Cleo and Clifford are excited to learn that Cleo will be Clifford’s houseguest for a weekend while her house is being painted. But soon Cleo is filling Clifford’s doghouse with her stuff, taking over his bed, and butting in on his time with Emily Elizabeth. Cleo eventually learns that being a good houseguest means respecting the needs and privacy of your host.

“MR. BLEAKMAN’S SPECIAL DAY”
When Mr. Bleakman appears to be having a bad day, the dogs perform a series of “secret good deeds” to see if they can turn his frown into a smile. They are surprised to learn that performing kind acts makes them feel much better too.

LATEST CLIFFORD NEWS:
· Winners of the third annual national “Clifford BE BIG In Your Community Contest,” which encourages people of all ages to bring Clifford’s BIG Ideas to life to help their hometowns, will be announced in October. The contest is part of Scholastic Media’s national BE BIG! Campaign.
