New "Space Battleship Yamato" Anime Coming In 2012

During the closing ceremonies for Anime Expo 2011, mechanical designer Makoto Kobayashi (Last Exile, Giant Robo) disclosed that he was involved in a new animated project for the sci-fi series Space Battleship Yamato. The project is reportedly a remake of the original series intended to premiere sometime next year. Kobayashi previously worked on the 2009 movie sequel Space Battleship Yamato: Resurrection.

First televised in 1974, Space Battleship Yamato follows the year-long quest of the titular ship and its crew to rescue Earth from radiation after it suffers nuclear attacks during war with the planet Gamila. The series spawned multiple sequels, including Yamato Resurrection and a live-action film remake in recent years. The series was adapted as Star Blazers by Voyager Entertainment and began its U.S. broadcast in 1979.
