First Look at Concept Art for Pixar's "Brave"

Walt Disney Feature Animation Studios and Pixar have released several new concept art images from Brave, Pixar’s thirteenth feature and their first to star a female protagonist. Click any thumbnail to enlarge:

The film is set in the Scottish Highlands where the unruly princess Merida defies a sacred custom of the land and inadvertently brings discord down upon her father’s kingdom. In an attempt to set matters right, she sets out on a quest for an eccentric old Wise Woman and is granted an ill-fated wish.

There have been major changes since the last time much has been heard about the film. Chief among them being original writer/director Brenda Chapman’s replacement by Mark Andrews. Though Andrews is now the head honcho on the film, Chapman will retain credit as co-director according to a Disney spokesman.

Other changes include the replacement of Reese Witherspoon with Scottish actress Kelly Macdonald in the role of the heroine, Merida, due to scheduling conflicts interfering with the former’s involvement.

Brave opens in theaters June 22, 2012.
