The New York Times has interviewed director Gore Verbinski on his upcoming animated movie Rango, starring Johnny Depp as a chameleon who thinks he’s a Old West hero. Among other topics, Verbinski discusses why he went from the blockbuster Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy to a movie about a wild west lizard, why he didn’t make the movie at Disney (which released the Pirates movies), why Johnny Depp said “Yes” to the project, and why he fought against the current trend to convert the movie to 3-D.
