Anti-Islamic Protests Begin Against Hub's "The 99" Animated Series

ICv2 and Comics Alliance are reporting on protests surrounding the animated series The 99, slated to debut on the new Hub network in January 2011. The series was created by Dr. Naif Al-Mutawa, in part to explicitly counter negative images of Islam in the media both in the West and in the Middle East, providing positive role models based on American superheroes to present a more moderate, tolerant depiction of Islam (check out Toonzone’s earlier coverage of the series in August 2008). However, an editorial by Andrea Peyser in the New York Post declares that the Hub should “Cancel The 99 Before It Starts,” declaring that “we don’t need religious icons masquerading as good guys.”
