SpongeBob Helps Boy Save Friend From Drowning

CBS reported an 8-year-old boy from New Jersey saved his 5-year-old neighbor from drowning last weekend with a swimming technique he says he learned from watching SpongeBob SquarePants.

Reese Ronceray swam into deep water and pulled Andrew Gentile back toward shore, making strokes with a single arm and his legs while supporting Gentile. He says he remembered the technique from watching the SpongeBob episode “SpongeGuard on Duty.”

Nickelodeon spokesman David Bittler released in a statement, “We are so happy to hear that Andrew is OK, and we’re proud that SpongeBob could inspire a great kid like Reese to be a hero.”

The full interview with the young hero can be found here.
