Miyazaki: Ghibli Like "A Wooden Boat That Journeys with Sails"

The New York Daily News has spoken with Studio Ghibli’s Hayao Miyazaki on the eve of the US release of his latest movie Ponyo. Describing his penchant for hand-drawn animation, Miyazaki said through a translator that, “I would like to have Studio Ghibli to be like a wooden boat that journeys with sails,” adding with his usual sense of pessimism: “Of course, we can sink. I don’t know if we’re very strong, and we’re not confident about the future.” The article also examines Miyazaki’s lack of box-office success in the United States to date and his eschewing of many forms of modern technology.
