Nickelodeon Logo Change Now Official

Variety has confirmed the Nickelodeon logo change, which has been circulating around the internet message boards for several weeks now.  For those who don’t speak Variety, the article confirms that all Nickelodeon channels will receive the new logo (including Nicktoons and Nick at Nite).  The new logo will also be used on the rebranded Nick Jr. and TeenNick networks (formerly Noggin and The N, respectively).

This article contains the first public comments, from Nickelodeon president Cyma Zarghami:

“In asking ourselves if everything could live under the splat, we decided
that the splat was dated… It just couldn’t be done in a
streamlined way.”

I agree with the renaming of the channels to put them under one umbrella.  I also recognize the need to unify the branding of all the Nick channels and services; the current applications are admittedly haphazard.

Yet I feel that Zarghami is completely wrong about the splat being dated.  Maybe the splat couldn’t have been streamlined, but the network seems to have forgotten that the logo could have been anything.  The network branding was not a splat – but rather a color that could be tweaked and modified as needed.  Perhaps the need for a rebranding could have been satisfied by a return to the original Fred/Alan philosophies, instead of starting anew.
