All-New Half-Hour Animated Special Follows Full-Day “Best Of” PPG= Marathon

DVD Boxed-Set Anniversary Edition Featuring Every PPG Episode and Special in Stores Jan. 20

Super-powered sisters Blossom, Bubbles and Buttercup take to the skies once more for their biggest battle yet in THE POWERPUFF GIRLS RULE!!!, a brand new half-hour animated special to air on Monday, Jan. 19, at 8 p.m. (ET, PT). To help celebrate the 10th anniversary of the groundbreaking Emmy(r) Award-winning series The Powerpuff Girls, Cartoon Network tapped acclaimed series creator Craig McCracken, to select his favorite episodes for a 14-hour marathon from 6 a.m. – 8 p.m. (ET, PT) to lead in to the world premiere of THE POWERPUFF GIRLS RULE!!! (TV-Y7FV) on Jan. 19.

“What started as a clever seven-minute student film, The Powerpuff Girls helped establish Cartoon Network as a creative force around the world,” said Rob Sorcher, chief content officer of Cartoon Network. “Today Cartoon Network celebrates 10 years of the now-iconic brand and the brilliance of Craig McCracken, who continues to bring us the classic cartoons of tomorrow.”

“Where Professor Utonium used sugar, spice, everything nice and an accidental dose of Chemical X to create his Girls, we used artists, writers, actors and an intentional dose of creative freedom to create a show, that to my humbled amazement still resonates with audiences a decade later,” said series creator Craig McCracken.

The Powerpuff Girls’ 10th anniversary special, THE POWERPUFF GIRLS RULE!!! is the first new episode since 2004. Written and directed by McCracken, it was produced at Cartoon Network Studios by the same team currently producing McCracken’s Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends. Still saving the day before bedtime, the world’s first kindergarten superheroes will be called upon to rescue the city of Townsville, USA, by retrieving a mysterious “Key to the World” that bestows absolute power to whoever possesses it. Crazed villains Mojo Jojo, Him, Fuzzy Lumpkins, Princess and The Amoeba Boys will stop at nothing to get their hands on the key. Someone will rule the world by the special’s end-will it be good or evil that prevails?

THE POWERPUFF GIRLS RULE!!! features the original voice actors from the television series. Cathy Cavadini returns as the voice of Blossom, the level-headed leader and ‘brains” of the trio. Tara Strong reprises her role as the voice of Bubbles, the sweet, sensitive and sometimes whiny member prone to super powered tantrums. And Elizabeth “E.G.” Daily roars back as the voice of Buttercup, the kick-hiney-first-and-ask-questions-later icon who serves as the group’s “muscle.” Also among the original cast, renowned voice-actor Tom Kenny returns as the Mayor of Townsville, Tom Kane as the Professor and Roger Jackson as Mojo Jojo.

Creator McCracken Selects Favorite Episodes for 14-Hour MLK, J-Day Marathon, 6 a.m.-8 p.m.

Cartoon Network’s Martin Luther King, Jr. Day event will begin with the presentation of hand-picked episodes of the original series, The Powerpuff Girls, from 6 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. (ET, PT). Immediately following from 12 – 5 p.m. (ET, PT), audiences will experience a cavalcade of the craziest, most outrageous villains that ever dared to pester the City of Townsville. Among the guest stars making an encore appearance are fan favorites Mojo Jojo, Fuzzy Lumpkins, Him and Princess, but also more quirky characters such as The Rowdyruff Boys, Sedusa, The Amoeba Boys and The Gangreen Gang.

Finally, at 5 p.m. (ET, PT), viewers will be treated to series creator Craig McCracken’s top 10 favorite episodes, those that, in his opinion, offered the best comedy, storytelling or the best visual “gags” over the course of The Powerpuff Girls’ six seasons.

The Powerpuff Girls History

The Powerpuff Girls premiered on Wednesday, Nov. 18, 1998, as the fourth breakout series from Cartoon Network’s “World Premiere Toons” shorts program, which commissioned individual seven-minute cartoons to find new characters and situations for future series development. Series creator McCracken, who went on to create another Emmy-winning animated series, Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends, brought the property to Cartoon Network based on his 1994 student film, The Whoopass Girls, which he produced and directed during his second year studying character animation at California Institute of the Arts (Cal Arts) in Valencia, Calif.

The Powerpuff Girls followed the adventures of three super-powered sisters-Blossom, Bubbles and Buttercup-who frequently ask to be excused from school so they can save the world. Created accidentally through an experiment by the benevolent Professor Utonium, the sugar-coated superheroes are united in their life’s mission, which typically alternates between delivering justice to all bad guys and skipping rope.

Honored with four Primetime Emmy nominations for “Outstanding Animated Program (One Hour or Less), The Powerpuff Girls also received two Juried Primetime Emmy Awards for art direction and individual achievement in animation. At the same time, The Powerpuff Girls toys, apparel and other merchandise skyrocketed in popularity nationwide, selling more than $1 billion at retail. In June 2001, The Powerpuff Girls snared three top prizes at the International Licensing Industry Merchandisers’ Association (LIMA) Annual Awards Gala for License of the Year, Entertainment/Character License of the Year and Soft Goods Licensee of the Year.
