AWN on Israel's Animation Industry after "Waltz with Bashir"

AWN has taken a look at the nascent Israeli animation industry, which has gotten a very high-profile boost from the animated documentary Waltz with Bashir, as well as the stop-motion movie $9.99 by Tatia Rosenthal which adapts the stories of Israeli writer Etgar Keret. Both discuss how the Israeli animation industry was essentially non-existent when they started their films, with Bashir director Ari Folman noting, “We started with six [animators], then we found another two. We needed two more and we couldn’t find them. So this is the state of animation [in Israel].” The rest of the article examines the growth of the industry and the upcoming CGI animated The Wild Bunch, directed by Doug Wood from a screenplay by Philip LaZebnik (Pocahontas, Mulan, and The Prince of Egypt).
