"SpongeBob" Copyright Lawsuit Dismissed
A lawsuit brought by Fairfield artist claiming he invented SpongeBob SquarePants has been dismissed (read Toon Zone News’ original coverage here). U.S. District Court Judge Susan Illston wrote that artist Troy Walker had not proven that his comic strip, “Mr. Bob Spongee, The Unemployeed Sponge,” was the basis of Stephen Hillenburg’s animated character, noting that Hillenburg had created a character named “Bob the Sponge” in 1989, two years before Walker had created his comic strip. However, Judge Illston did not require Walker to pay defense attorney legal fees.
Walker stated that he plans to appeal the decision.
