Nickelodeon Dives Deep into the History of the Biggest Feud in Bikini Bottom

Burbank, Calif. – April 3, 2007 – They were once the best of friends and now… they are the worst of enemies. The two biggest business adversaries in Bikini Bottom have a secret hidden past, and viewers will finally learn how one-time best buddies, Plankton and Mr. Krabs, became lifelong enemies in Friend or Foe?, a special SpongeBob SquarePants programming event kicking off on Friday, April 13 at 5:00-10:00 p.m. ET/PT. SpongeBob Friend or Foe? will include a five-hour, interactive marathon of SpongeBob SquarePants episodes, an interactive live-action convergent contest and an all-new SpongeBob episode, Friend or Foe?, hosted by Patchy the Pirate (airing 8:00-8:30 p.m. ET/PT).

In the new episode, Mr. Krabs recounts the origin of his bitter rivalry with Plankton following one of Plankton’s failed attempts at stealing his Krabby Patty formula. He reveals that there was a time when the two were actually the best of friends, and through a series of flashbacks, tells the tale of how their friendship turned sour. Patchy the Pirate hosts the show and joins in the fun by attempting to create his own Pirate version of the Krabby Patty.

“We are always looking for new ways to tell stories and go beyond the traditional platforms of presenting them to our audience,” said Tom Ascheim, Executive Vice-President & General Manager, Nickelodeon Television. “Friend or Foe?” reveals the great back story of the long-standing feud between Mr. Krabs vs. Plankton and we’re offering kids an interactive opportunity to get involved in the story and spirited contest by rooting for one or the other.”

As part of the special programming event, Nickelodeon will hold “The Friend or Foe-Down,” a convergent, live-action contest where two teams of real kids meet a series of challenges on Friday, April 13 from 5 to 8:30 p.m. ET/PT. The event, taped on-site at the Nickelodeon Family Suites by Holiday Inn, will air during a special edition of Nickelodeon’s ME:TV, the network’s new convergent live daypart. Team Krabs and Team Plankton will each be comprised of three real kids lead by team captains and ME:TV hosts Alexandra Gizela and Jordan Carlos. Each team will be infiltrated by a foe, someone who is secretly working for the other team, as they partake in a series of funny and messy physical group challenges refereed by Tom Kenny as Patchy the Pirate (also the voice of SpongeBob). Players at home can sign on to Nick.com as a supporter of one of the teams and participate by entering statistics and clues about each team member to determine the identity of the secret foe on their team. The winners will be announced on-air at the end of the night.

Starting Monday, April 2, kids can log on to TurboNick.com to catch a sneak peek of Friend or Foe?, check out team profile interstitials and watch clips from themed episodes. Immediately following the episode’s on-air premiere, Friend or Foe? will stream on TurboNick.com. On Thursday, April 5, Nick.com will launch a new online game themed to the special episode called “Friend or Foe Trash Bash.” Fans play as childhood pals Plankton and Krabs as they navigate barnacle-encrusted platforms slippery with seaweed, all the while avoiding an ever-rising pile of undersea rubbish in hot pursuit of the lost Krabby Patty recipe.

On Wednesday, April 4, a sneak peek of Friend or Foe? and clips from themed episodes will be available on wireless platforms. Video On Demand windowing will commence throughout the month of April featuring Friend or Foe? themed content.

SpongeBob SquarePants: Friend or Foe? will be released nationwide on DVD on April 17. Bonus features include the original uncut animatic for Friend or Foe? and special Plankton and Mr. Krabs photo gallery.

Launched in July 1999, SpongeBob SquarePants has since emerged as a pop culture phenomenon and one of the most popular series in kids’ television history. The Saturday morning play of the series currently ranks as the number-one rated program among Kids 2-11. SpongeBob SquarePants is executive produced by creator Stephen Hillenburg, who previously worked as a writer, director and creative director on Nickelodeon’s animated series Rocko’s Modern Life. Hillenburg graduated from the California Institute of the Arts with a master’s degree in experimental animation and studied marine biology and art as an undergraduate. Hillenburg created and executive produced The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie which hit theaters in November 2004.

Paul Tibbitt served as a director and writer on SpongeBob SquarePants for its first three seasons and is currently executive producer. He wrote some of the show’s most memorable episodes such as “Ripped Pants” and “Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy.” Tibbitt was one of the co-writers and storyboard artists on The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie.
