"Tales from Earthsea" Topped Japanese Box Office in 2006

Variety reports that Tales from Earthsea (Gedo Senki), the Studio Ghibli film directed by Goro Miyazaki, was the No. 1 box office hit in Japan for 2006, earning $63.2 million. Fifth was Death Note: The Last Name, a live action film based on the manga by Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata, with $43 million.

Notably, Variety points out that Japanese films took in $890.5 million of the total $1.7 billion, or 53.2 percent, the first time domestic films had topped foreign releases for revenue in 21 years. The article also counted 417 local releases of Japanese-made films, the first time in 33 years that number had topped 400.

Last week Tales from Earthsea was awarded Worst Film and Worst Director at the Japanese Razzies.
