"Last Unicorn" 25th Anniversary DVD Announced
AnimatedBliss.com is reporting that a 25th Anniversary Edition DVD of The Last Unicorn will be released on February 6, 2007. The movie — based on the novel of the same name by Peter S. Beagle, who also wrote the screenplay — stars Jeff Bridges, Mia Farrow, Angela Lansbury, and Rene Auberjonois in a fantasy adventure of a unicorn in search of her missing brethren. The DVD will present the movie in anamorphic widescreen with a Dolby 5.1 soundtrack.
Toon Zone News spoke to Connor Cochran, Mr. Beagle’s business manager, who confirmed the release and provided more information about it. The disc will be made from the digitally-remastered German edition of the DVD, which is of much better quality than the existing American pan-and-scan print. Beagle also provided a video interview as an extra for the new disc, as well as photos, art scans, and text.
Unfortunately, the new DVD does not signal a change in the conflict between Beagle and Granada over payment of Beagle’s profit share from the original film (details of which are available at the Conlan Press website). According to Cochran, their argument is “with the folks at Granada, not Lions Gate,” and Beagle supports the new release because “fans of The Last Unicorn deserve better” than the current home video version of the movie. Cochran added that the re-release of the film will promote Beagle’s other books and his website, and that negotiations are currently on-going with Granada for a resolution to the issues over compensation for the movie.
